The New York Times wants standardized tags for news sites

The New York Times is announcing the TimesTags API, which exposes the tags used to build what they call their “Times Topics pages”. Underneath this is a full-blown taxonomy used by their indexers since 1851, which appears to also contain some rudimentary typing information.

The relevance to Topic Maps? This part of the announcement:

We see our tags as a contribution to existing metadata discussions and efforts, such as Freebase, Topic Maps, Fuzzzy and similar projects. If TimesTags can also spark a movement that advocates standardized tags for news sites, so much the better.

So clearly they need to be convinced to ditch their taxonomy in favour of a standardized Topic Maps ontology for the news industry.
